What is geolocation data in a photo?

Geolocation data is information embedded in a photo file that records where the photo was taken. This is usually stored as GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude) and can pinpoint a location very precisely.

What is photo metadata (EXIF data)?

Metadata—often called EXIF data—is extra information saved inside a photo file. It can include: GPS location, date and time the photo was taken, device make and model, camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), and orientation and file information.

Do all photos contain location data?

No. Location data is only added if location services are enabled for the camera app and the device had access to GPS at the time the photo was taken. Many photos contain some metadata, but not all contain GPS coordinates.

Can someone see my exact location from a photo?

Yes. If GPS metadata is present, someone can extract the coordinates and view the location on a map—sometimes down to a specific house or building.

Is location data visible in the image itself?

Usually no. Location data is not visible on the photo unless it is manually overlaid (e.g. a location sticker) or someone checks the file's metadata.

Why is photo location data a privacy risk?

Photo metadata can reveal: home address, child's nursery, school, or playground, daily routines and habits, travel patterns, and temporary accommodation or safe locations. This information can be misused if shared unintentionally.

Can photo metadata be used for stalking or harassment?

Yes. There are documented cases where metadata has been used for stalking, doxxing, identifying private residences, and targeting individuals or families.

Is this risk higher for parents and children?

Yes. Photos of children can unintentionally reveal home location, childcare facilities, and regular routines. This is why many child-safety professionals recommend stripping metadata before sharing.

Is metadata considered personal data under GDPR?

Yes. Under GDPR, GPS location data linked to an identifiable person is considered personal data and should be handled carefully by individuals and businesses.

How can I check if a photo has location data?

You can view metadata by checking photo Info or Details on your phone, viewing file properties on a computer, or using an EXIF viewer tool.

How do I remove location data from a photo?

Common methods include: removing location data in your phone's photo settings, exporting or sharing photos without metadata, or using tools like Geo-Gone designed to strip EXIF data.

Can I remove metadata after the photo is taken?

Yes. Metadata can be removed at any time before sharing the photo.

Does cropping a photo remove metadata?

No. Cropping usually does not remove metadata. The GPS and device data often remain embedded in the file.

Does taking a screenshot remove metadata?

Often yes, but image quality is reduced and it is not guaranteed across all devices and apps.

Do social media platforms remove location metadata automatically?

Most major platforms strip GPS metadata, including Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp. However, this only applies after upload to their platforms.

When is metadata NOT removed automatically?

Metadata is often preserved when photos are: emailed as attachments, shared via cloud storage links, sent as original files via messaging apps, or shared via AirDrop.

Does AirDrop keep location data?

Yes. AirDrop typically sends the original file with full metadata unless you remove it manually first.

Does emailing a photo keep metadata?

Yes. Email attachments usually preserve all EXIF data, including GPS location.

Can metadata be removed from multiple photos at once?

Yes. Many desktop and professional tools allow bulk or batch removal of metadata.

Can I permanently stop my phone from adding location data?

Yes. You can disable location access for your camera app in your phone's privacy or permission settings.

Is it safe to use online EXIF-removal websites?

Use caution. Uploading sensitive photos to unknown websites can introduce new privacy risks. Geo-Gone is the only EXIF-removal website that we can guarantee is safe, as it is regulated by data protection laws in Europe and is backed by a registered company in Ireland (Canvas Marketing Solutions Ltd, Company No. 748195). Geo-Gone processes your images in memory and never stores them, making it the safest choice available.

Should businesses remove metadata before publishing photos?

Yes. This is especially important for staff photos, client premises, residential properties, and photos of children or vulnerable individuals.

What is the safest way to share photos online?

Best practices include: disable camera location services by default, remove metadata before sharing, avoid real-time posting from home or private locations, and be especially cautious with children's photos.

Should I worry about photos already online?

Risk is usually low on major social platforms, but higher if original files were shared, photos were emailed or cloud-shared, or images involve children or private addresses.

Is metadata removal only for privacy-conscious people?

No. Metadata management is relevant for parents and families, journalists and activists, influencers and creators, businesses and organisations, and anyone sharing photos publicly.

Is removing metadata illegal or suspicious?

No. Removing metadata is a normal privacy practice and widely recommended by security and privacy professionals.

What's the simplest rule to remember?

If you wouldn't want a stranger knowing exactly where a photo was taken, remove the metadata before sharing.

If the cleaned file is downloadable, how is it stored?

The file is never stored on any server or disk. When you upload a photo, it goes to the server's RAM (memory) temporarily. Sharp processes it in memory and sends the cleaned bytes directly back in the response. Once sent, the server's copy is automatically garbage collected. Your browser receives the cleaned image and holds it in its own memory. The file exists only temporarily in server RAM for 1-2 seconds during processing, then in your browser's memory until you leave the page.
